Cindy Prior is an Administration Officer at Queensland University of Technology, Australia. In 2013 she asked a white student, Alex Wood, to leave a University computer lab which which was reserved for the use of 'indigenous' students. After being kicked out of the lab due to his race Wood posted to Facebook: "Just got kicked out of the unsigned Indigenous computer room. QUT is stopping segregation with segregation,".
His post drew a number of comments critical of the incident and the official university policy of deciding facility access on the basis of student race including the comments following comments from other students "I wonder where the white supremacist lab is," (Jackson Powell) and an alleged post referring to "ITT N---s" by Calum Thwaites - who has denied writing the post.
The three students - Alex Wood, Jackson Powell, Calum Thwaites - as well as the university and two other staff members are being sued by Cindy Prior who took sick leave following the incident and states that she feels 'unsafe' leaving her home due to the fear of having anyone say something offensive to her and consequently made a complaint to the Australian Human Rights Commission claiming to have suffered “offence, embarrassment, humiliation and psychiatric injury”.
The lawsuit has already (as of 14 April 2016) forced the students to employ legal counsel costing tens of thousands of dollars and is considered to potentially cost in the region of $200,000 in total.
